Tribe Called Quest finally make it to Australia

by rivals on Jun.17, 2010, under News

Finally, after too many years of waiting, Tribe Called Quest are coming down under!

Tribe Downunder

Press Release Below:

Niche Productions, Peace Music and TrentSlingshot
present

For the first time ever in Australia

A TRIBE CALLED QUEST

Wednesday 11 August – Hordern Pavilion, Sydney

Thursday 12 August – Festival Hall, Melbourne

For the first time ever in the Southern Hemisphere, Niche Productions, Peace Music and TrentSlingshot are proud to present the eminent A Tribe Called Quest, featuring all the original members, celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album, ‘People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm’ with a select number of shows worldwide, including Sydney on August 11 and Melbourne on August 12.

Without question the most intelligent and artistic hip-hop group during the 1990s, A Tribe Called Quest jump-started and perfected the hip-hop alternative to hardcore and gangsta rap. In essence, they abandoned the macho posturing rap music had been constructed upon, and focused instead on abstract philosophy and message raps over blunted Jazz instrumentals.
With no doubt, A Tribe Called Quest are the biggest, most seminal hip-hop group in history, with legions of fans all over the world. Originating in 1985, the group signed to Jive Records and released five studio albums from 1989 – 1998 before disbanding. Since 2004 the trio have reformed to play a handful of shows across the US including the 2006 Bumbershoot festival in Seattle and the 2004 and 2008 Rock The Bells shows.
Forming in high school in Queens where Q-Tip and childhood friend Phife met DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad, the Tribe were named by the Jungle Brothers, who also attended the same school. Jumping straight in to performing and releasing their debut recording with their 1989 single ‘Description of a Fool’ the group have gone on to be one of the most dynamic and critically acclaimed rap groups in history.

A Tribe Called Quest are a member of the Native Tongues rap crew with De La Soul, Jungle Brothers and Black Sheep and more recently Mos Def and Common amongst others.

Their follow up release ‘The Low End Theory’ outdid all expectations and has become one of the most distinctive hip-hop records of all times. ‘Midnight Marauders’ is their fastest and best selling album.

Having rarely played together over the past 12 years, A Tribe Called Quest will be hitting our shores with all the original members to make hip-hop history as they play their first ever Australian shows. These select shows will be an absolute must for all hip-hop fans as we witness one of the most respected and charismatic acts in the world performing in what is sure to be the shows everyone is talking about for years to come.
